Information to know when expecting bad weather this winter.
/ DURING A STORM
- Stay indoors during the storm.
- Walk carefully on snowy, icy, walkways.
- Keep dry, change wet clothing frequently to prevent loss of body heat.
- If you must go outside, wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer of heavy clothing. The outer garments should be tightly woven and water repellent.
- Wear gloves, mittens, a hat, and cover your mouth with a scarf.
/ COMMUNICATION
- Contact your family to share information about where you plan to be in the event of a storm and how you can be contacted.
- Keep your cell phone fully charged.
/ ELECTRONIC & DOCUMENT PREP
- Back up your computer data.
- Protect electronic equipment with plastic bags.
- Make sure you have a cell phone with an emergency charging option in case of power failure.
- Protect important documents in a waterproof container (zip lock plastic bags) that you can take with you.
/ SUPPLIES
- Assemble a disaster supplies kit with water, non-perishable food and snacks, medical supplies, a change of clothes, and both a battery-powered radio and flashlight. You should have enough to get through three days after a winter storm hits.
- Have a full tank of gas in your vehicle.
- Have cash on hand. ATMs and credit cards do not work if there is a power failure.
/ APARTMENT
- Keep all doors and windows shut and locked.
- Keep the heat on and the thermostat at 64 degrees or higher.
- Open cabinet doors under the kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow heat to the plumbing.
- If you are not home, management may enter your apartment for the above purposes in order to avoid potential property damage from burst water pipes as authorized in your lease agreement.
